This year we didn’t have as many successful games like prior years, especially ones that could utilize the new gen systems potential. However, there were still a few that managed to live up to their expectations and more. In this post we’ll be checking out the top 5 console games of this year and how they earned their place. Elden Ring
No surprise here with Elden Ring as its arguably the best game of the year next to god of war Ragnarok. By bringing the open world aspect to the worlds of Soulsborne, Fromsoftware delivered their usual brutal but rewarding game on a much bigger scale. As well as adding open world they also made the game a bit more friendly to people who are new to the Soulsborne games. However, this is in no way a negative for the hardcore fans of the series. Instead Elden Ring creates a space for both new and veteran Soulsborne gamers to enjoy. There’s also a new DLC that just released introducing more PVP content, thus making the feature more seamless than ever.
Nobody saves the world
By far one of the best all around indie games to come out this year, Nobody saves the World is an awesome experience with friends both local and online. The game brings a gameplay style that has the players use different characters for certain areas or enemies. Although the gameplay is fairly simple, its different classes of characters and upgrade system brings it plenty of depth. As for Xbox users who have the gamepass, they can get this game for free which is a huge plus.
God of War: Ragnarok
Besides Elden Ring there were many disappointments early on in the year with gaming, though thankfully God of War: Ragnarok delivered as promised. Santa Monica does a great job elevating what was already great about the last game, as well as its graphics. The gameplay stays relatively the same with the addition of a new weapon and different enemies. Both the gameplay and story are the main reasons that make the game so enjoyable along with its boss fights. God of War: Ragnarok is exclusive to PlayStation though, it is highly likely that it’ll arrive on PC sometime next year.
Cult of the Lamb
Cult of the Lamb is another great indie game which also released earlier this year. A sort of rougelike management game with a unique premise compared to games like Stardew Valley or Hades. Although replayability isn’t where it excels at, it still brings a fun engaging experience of around 12 hours. If longevity is what you’re looking for then this game may not be for you, though its still worth checking out as its still a great time and not so expensive at $30.
Scorn
Compared to The Callisto Protocol which was disappointing for a game at full price, Scorn delivers a much better experience. Available for free with the Xbox gamepass or $40 without, Scorn brings players to an eerie and disturbing environment. Filled with puzzles and intricate environments, the game doesn’t hold the players hand the whole time. Instead your left to figure out most of the puzzles and directions on your own, which for people who enjoy the high of completing a level or puzzle its perfect. If you don’t then I wouldn’t recommend this as you may get frustrated early on. Overall its an enjoyable playthrough especially if you don’t try to rush through it.
