Anime had a hell of a year in 2022, by adapting some of the communities most beloved mangas. However, this 2023 looks like it could be an even better year for anime fans. From adaptations of fans most anticipated arcs from their favorite anime to popular light novels in the community. Here we’ll look into the top new and returning anime this winter season, along with where to stream them.
Returning is one of new best isekai animes to hit streaming services, The Eminence in Shadow. While some fans of the light novel adaptation may be dissapointed of the changes the anime made, it should still be appreciated for what it is. Even with it not being a direct copy from the light novels or the manga; it’s still just as good or better than most isekais out right now. The anime will continue to air regularly every Wednesday at HIDIVE.
Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown
Tokyo Revengers is making its return with the christmas showdown arc, which features some of manga readers favorite moments. Additionally, with the manga ending recently, were bound to see an announcement whether it’ll get renewed or not later this year. Catch the new season January 8 on Disney+ or Hulu depending where you’re located.
NieR: Automata Ver1.1a
Square enix’s hit action rpg game NieR Automata is getting an anime adaptation this upcoming winter season. So far based off the official synopsis the story will be aiming to follow the plot of the game. Though of course there’s bound to be some changes or additions to make it work for a shows pacing. The show is expected to air January 7.
Is it wrong to Try to pick up girls in a dungeon? part IV
The continuation to the most intense season of DanMachi(Family Myth) is coming soon, so far our protagonist Bell Cranel has been through hell. However, based off where we left off, it doesn’t seem like it’ll get any better for him or the elf Ryu. Also it looks like we’ll be getting to look at what once was the astrea familia. The second part is expected to air January 5.
The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten
For anyone who loves romance animes, The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten is one of the few fan favorite light novels getting an anime adaptation this season. In case the title alone didn’t give it away already, this will be one of the many romance animes to come this season. The show airs this coming January 7.
Spy Classroom
Spy Classroom is another light novel getting adapted into an anime, this one as it obviously suggest will focus on a group of spies. In fact the light novel has won several awards in Japan, so this adaptation is crucial to show viewers why it deserved those awards. It’s expected to air January 5.
The Ice guy and his Cool female colleague
The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague is one of many fans recently most liked shojo mangas that’s getting its anime adaptation. This story however adds some supernatural elements to the mix. Mainly with our protagonist belonging to a supernatural race of beings with strange freezing abilities. The show airs January 4.
By the Grace of the Gods S2
Finally we have the continuation to the 2020 anime By the Grace of the Gods this winter season. As expected this year is filled with isekai anime adaptations, while some may be a waste this is a nice chill vibe to get into. The show will be airing January 8.
Handyman Saitou in Another World
As I mentioned before the isekais just keep on coming every season, this manga adaptation though has a unique twist to its main character. Many may enjoy seeing something different in this genre especially with the amount of copy and paste MC’s recently. The anime airs January 8.
Kubo won’t let me be Invisible
Another shojo manga gets its anime adaptation with Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible. The story is pretty much self explanatory through its title, involving our main character who has a severe lack of presence and a girl who won’t leave him alone. This show is premiering January 10.
Kaina of the Great Snow Sea
Kaina of the Great of the Snow Sea is one of the few original shows were getting this winter season. The story revolves around a world covered in a growing ocean of snow where people must live either around the roots of huge trees which dott the surface or high up in its canopies. The show airs January 12.
Campfire Cooking with My Absurd Skill
This year it seems like mappa is delving into an isekai this time around. Similar to the handyman saitou anime, this one features a unique spin on the genre and your typical save the magical world plot. This time our MC Tsuyoshi is gifted with only the skill “online grocery” which to many seemed pointless for saving the world. However, Tsuyoshis skill will prove to be of some use in his own adventure through the new world. The show airs this January 11.
The Fire Hunter
The Fire Hunter is based off a novel which takes place in a post apocalyptic fantasy world, where people burst into flames if they get close to a fire source. The only safe fire lies within flamelings and other fallen beasts, the people in charge of hunting them are the fire hunters. The show airs January 14.
Blue Lock
Blue Lock looks to continue the anime with its second cour which adds a number of important characters who may play a bigger role. Some of these guys will be bringing out the best moments from the manga that fans are anxious to see onscreen. The show will be back on January 6.
Tomo-chan is a Girl
This winter season we get ourselves an interesting Rom-Com with Tomo-chan is a girl featuring a tomboy female character trying to get her delusional crush to notice her as a girl instead of just one of the boys. An exact date isn’t confirmed yet but it is expected to air sometime January 4, 2023.
Mononogatari: Malevolent Spirits
Malevolent Spirits is another entry to the ever so complicated Mononogatari series, while I haven’t personally started the series yet, this might be a good excuse to do so. The story here revolves around Hyouma Kunato who is apart of a clan that sends spirits peacefully back to their world. However, our MC has grown to despise them for taking something he once cherished. The anime premieres January 9.
(The misfit of demon king academy S2
Returning is one of the best demon kings we’ve had in anime, Anos Voldigoad is confronted yet again with a new issue to deal with. This time Anos looks into a conspiracy over how the gods took advantage of the hero Kanons plans 2000 years ago in order to create the fake demon king Avos Dilhevia. The misfit of demon king academy comes back January 8.
Bungou Stray Dogs S4
Bungou Stray Dogs finally comes back with a new season after the most recent season in 2019. Bringing back our favorite characters from the armed detective agency into a grueling new story, with the public now slandering the good name of the agency and new enemies popping up to destroy the world. How will the agency face this new threat? Find out more once it airs next January 4.
Vinland Saga S2
This anime is one I’m glad got its second season so soon, Vinland comes back this next winter season delivering another harsh but beautiful journey with Thorfinn heading back to Iceland from the end of last season. We will be introduced to new characters and their harsh story as they come to affect the world around Thorfinn. Season 2 arrives January 9.
